Winning the Lottery Within
In May 2016 I wrote an article titled The Book I Have to Write Before I Die. The primary purpose of this public declaration was to hold me accountable to see this goal become a reality. I owed it to my daughter to leave something behind in case anything every happened to me. I owed it to everyone else I'll ever have the privilege of interacting with to put my best message forward in the hopes that I can make an impact in their lives. It's a tall order, and I had to battle demons of self-doubt and imposter syndrome along the way (more on this in future blog articles). Thankfully, I'm incredibly proud of the results, and I believe that all the time and effort that was put into it was worth it, because #youmatter.
Why Should You Read This Book?
Because somewhere in your life you gave up on a goal or a dream because of a dis-empowering belief. You believed you were not good enough, smart enough, fast enough, pretty enough, charismatic enough, or rich enough. Or maybe you were born in the wrong country, with the wrong parents, and as the wrong gender. Maybe your timing was off, or the market conditions changed underneath you. Whatever the reason, there was some external factor "out there" that is the cause of all your pain and suffering. If only things were different! If only you won the lottery! Only then would you be able to be able to create the life you wanted.
Are You Blaming External Conditions?
Most of us hope and wish for things around us to change instead of turning inward to recognize that we have the power to choose our response to whatever shows up in life. This small but significant shift in mindset is what allows us to adopt a more empowering set of beliefs, namely:
- You are the author of your own story.
- Your decisions are more important than your DNA in determining your destiny.
What I Wish I Learned in High School
This book would have saved me at least a decade of search and struggle. Nobody taught me that we all had different strengths and ways that we learn. Nobody gave me permission to question how the world works. Nobody helped me find my inner drive or discover what I was truly passionate about.
No, this book will not provide you with quick fixes or a comprehensive answer to all the world's problems. That is not the point. It will, however, help you recognize all the resources that are already around you and within you. It will help you replace your current worldview with a more empowering one. And if you back up that change in mindset by taking action, you will begin to take more ownership and control over your life (without needing to win the Powerball).
Live on 11/11!
